Ruth Drayer

"The artist's vocation is to send light into the human heart." Robert Shumann

Always an artist, I worked in many art forms before turning to painting as an outlet for my love of color and design. Over the years, I evolved a process that begins when I spread a compound or gel on the canvas and then sand it until it is smooth. This adds depth and movement to the appearance.

Before choosing any colors, I paint a sacred symbol or character as the foundation and then set about concealing it. The presence and power remain, however the symbol does not limit or influence my work. This leaves me free to clear my mind and focus on the interaction of the colors and brush strokes. I often use my fingers or a cloth and wipe off color while applying more layers. When the composition is finished it has a harmony that conveys something through the silent language of form, color, and design which speaks to each person individually.

Any imagery comes from my subconscious, which is crammed with vivid colors and fascinating images accumulated through 30-some years of meditation and traveling throughout the world, studying art and architecture everywhere. I love ancient history and cultures and feel that my work somehow bridges the West and the East.

I began painting after returning from India where I worked with Svetoslav Roerich, son of the famous couple whose biography I wrote: Nicholas & Helena Roerich, The Spiritual Journey of Two Great Artists and Peacemakers. I consider Nicholas Roerich as my artistic mentor. The Roerichs were a Russian couple who traveled extensively through Central Asia and the Orient during the 1920s.

The author of Numerology, The Power in Numbers, I am a highly respected authority on numerology with clients around the country. My books are sold in all parts of the world and my paintings are in private collections throughout the United States and Canada. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., I now live in Sante Fe, New Mexico.

Some people ask how to relate to my art … and the answer is to simply enjoy it. I believe that color and beauty aid us to achieve the serenity so important to balancing the demands of today. My vibrantly colorful, spiritual paintings, original prints, individual ceramic tiles, or murals will enrich any home or office.
